Results from the Management Success! Seminar
I bought my shop from the previous owner around 3 years ago, I was a good tech and had worked in various types of shops, so I knew the business from the back, and knew how to fix the cars. I soon found out that I did not know how to run a business.
I was working 70 hours a week, not making a paycheck, just trying to pay the bills, keep the customers happy and the business open. I had the heart, but not the knowledge to make my shop successful. As a tech I went to a school and was trained in that skill, as an owner I had no training. There is much more to a successful shop than just fixing cars.
After 2 years of working hard and not having anything to show for it I decided to attend the Management Success "How to Increase Your Profits" Seminar in Lake Geneva. Wow! The speaker was talking about all of the things I was struggling with in my shop, I was that little stick guy running around with his hair on fire in the presentation.
I returned to my shop from the seminar with a plan. I now knew what I needed to to get my shop to "Ideal Land". I quickly started implementing what I learned, from pricing, to shop flow, to doing inspections, how to sell properly, etc. I got myself out of the back and hired another tech so I could run the business, not my service writer.
Since the Seminar last August, my business is now far more organized, I know what is going on at all times and we are making money on each and every job. I am only working 40 hours a week and have more time for the family, not to mention I am drawing my salary and saving money in reserves.
